Brothers Residence

for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart
This new home was designed and constructed to house the Brothers of the Sacred Heart who operate St. Stanislaus College Boys Preparatory School located in “The Bay” for over 150 years. The original home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Many century old vacation and permanent residences were lost to that storm and the design of this home pays homage to the style, material and proportion of these structures. While designed to withstand 140 mph winds the house maintains the deep overhangs, portches, beach views and cross ventilation so typical of those age old homes. The standing seam metal roof proved its value on many structures that held up to the intensity of the storm and its use here makes a strong pragmatic and aesthetic statement.

The plan provides large public spaces for living, dining and chapel while in the rear and second floor of the home individual bedroom suites with bath accommodate eight Brothers. A courtyard created by the buildings plan provides a quiet outdoor room that faces the campus.

My husband and I worked with Nora on the redesign and updating of our kitchen. Nora did a great job of taking our kitchen into the present day without taking away from or altering the style of our 1860's cottage. Nora was a great help in rethinking the way we use our rooms, suggesting turning the formal parlor into our dinning room which resulted in a fresh more open layout of our home accented by her paint color selections.

Nora was a dream to work with and did an outstanding job on our sorority chapter room! The women are beyond excited about their new design and everything was done professionally and on time. I would certainly use her services in the future! I can not say enough about how pleased we are!

After working with Ed and Nora on several historical projects, I have come to greatly admire their respect for the existing structure as well as respecting their clients' wishes. The attention to detail is unmatched and their designs blend seamlessly between old and new. The results are always happy clients.

My husband and I worked with Nora on the interior re-design of our home and she was absolutely fantastic. She did a great job identifying our style and blending it with her vision of what our house could become. We are thrilled with the results! Nora also helped us make design choices on window treatments and furniture upholstery. She was very professional and her expertise saved us countless hours and energy. Nora put us at ease and we never felt awkward when we had to re-evaluate an idea and stick within our budget. She offered a range of options at different price points. Most importantly, she helped us make the most of the treasured items we already owned and transformed this house into our home. Her ideas, eye for design, and talent make Nora a real joy to work with!
